Filipino fiber weaving shown in the 30th ASEAN Summit

Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Pinol and Undersecretary for Administration, Agribusiness and Regional Engagement Bernadette Romulo-Puyat view the live demonstration of Mandaya weavers of Davao Oriental on the sidelines of the 30th ASEAN Summit on April 26/Thursday at the Philippine International Convention Center. Mandaya weavers re experts in using abaca and often use traditional patterns such as those imitating crocodiles in the embossed fabric. Pinol assured the weavers that reviving the fiber industry is one of his top priorities as DA Secretary. He said he wanted to provide them livelihood assistance in order to maintain the tradition of weaving. During the ASEAN Summit, delegates can enjoy the demonstration of traditional weaving from indigenous weavers from South Cotabato (T’nalak), Aklan (Pina-silk), Iloilo (Hablon), and Cordillera (traditional weaving). ### (Photo by Alan Jay Jacalan, DA-AFID)
