Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. on Friday pledged to help fast track the local hog industry’s recovery from the ill-effects of the African Swine Fever (ASF).
“The Department of Agriculture is fully committed to taking decisive actions against the spread of ASF and revitalizing the hog industry,” the agri chief said.
“Our immediate focus involves reinforcing biosecurity measures, enhancing quarantine protocols, and implementing robust sanitation practices in hog farms nationwide to prevent further outbreaks. We are dedicated to intensifying surveillance and monitoring efforts for swift detection and response to new ASF cases, recognizing the critical role of early detection in controlling the virus,” he added.
As this developed, the agri chief expressed hope that local hog raisers would land a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as they attempt to serve more than 400 pork dishes during the National Pig Day Celebration.
The National Federation of Hog Farmers is spearheading the bid for a Guinness world record during the 5-day Hog Festival, an event Natfed expects will help boost morale in the local swine industry still reeling from ASF.
From record-high year-end inventory of 12.8 million heads of pigs in 2020, the number had fallen to 9.94 million and 9.43 million in 2021 and 2022, respectively, with most of the reduction coming from smallholds whose inventory dropped to 7.18 million in 2022 from a high of 9.44 million in 2020. “
At the end of September last year, total inventory declined to 9.86 million heads from 10.1 million in the same period in 2022.
He said DA is collaborating with scientific institutions and industry experts “to drive the development of innovative solutions for ASF management and eventual eradication.” He said the agency is also engaging other nations to draw from their experiences and best practices in successfully managing, if not eradicating, ASF.
“We understand the financial strain on our farmers and we’re committed to providing financial assistance and support programs. Additionally, extensive public awareness campaigns is a priority to educate farmers, industry stakeholders, and the public about preventive measures against ASF. Knowledge is a powerful tool, and through awareness, we aim to empower everyone to contribute to the eradication of ASF,” he added.
As for the Guinness World Record attempt, Sec. Tiu Laurel said the DA and Natfed seek to break new boundaries that will help position the Philippines as a premier food tourism destination.
“Let’s embark on this journey with enthusiasm, joy, and a hearty appetite. Together, we’ll make history, break records, and showcase the undeniable brilliance of Filipino pork. Here’s to leaving our mark in history, one delicious bite at a time!” the agri chief said. ###
