On August 20, 2020, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) lodged a diplomatic protest against China for the illegal confiscation by the Chinese Coast Guard of fish aggregating devices (FADs) of Filipino fishermen in Bajo de Masinloc in May.
FADs, locally known as payaos, consist of a floating raft anchored by a weighted line with suspended materials such as palm fronds. These are deployed in strategic areas to attract pelagic and schooling species common in deep waters.
While the matter is being handled by the DFA through appropriate channels, the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) will continue to ensure that necessary support is given to our fisherfolk through the provision of livelihood interventions.
The Bureau will also continue implementing programs like the Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan aimed at strengthening the commitment of local government units in the protection of the marine environment, especially in municipal waters and other traditional fishing grounds, where critical marine habitats are located, and where fish reproduce and grow. ###
