Secretary Manny F. Piñol awards to the family of former Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Edgardo J. Angara a posthumous recognition for the late Senator’s invaluable contribution to the development of the agriculture sector during his stewardship at the Department from 1999 to 2001.
As a prime mover of rural development, Angara championed the advancement of food production programs and support services that brought about the increase in the volume of rice yield and other important food staples in the Philippines.
Under his command as the over-all chief of the Agriculture Department, food production industries recorded a growth rate of 3.6 percent, which established countryside development and progress, increase in the income of farmers and fishers, and the upliftment of lives and livelihood in the rural areas.
Angara instituted modernization in the Philippine agriculture and fishery thru the Agriculture and Fishery Modernization Act, which he himself authored.
The posthumous award, received by Angara’s wife Gloria, and children Senator Sonny and Ana, was one of the highlights of the 120th founding anniversary celebration of the DA, held on June 25, 2018.
DA was established just eleven days after the declaration of Philippine independence, on June 23, 1898. (DA-AFID)
