As Christmas and New Year approach, the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) conducted a joint inspection of wet markets and grocery stores in Guadalupe, Makati City, on December 19. The inspection aimed to ensure that supplies of Noche Buena and agricultural products remain adequate and that their prices stay reasonable.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. and Trade and Industry Secretary Ma. Cristina A. Roque led the inspection, which was organized in collaboration with the DTI’s Fair Trade Enforcement Bureau–Surveillance Monitoring Division, the DA’s Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service, and the City Government of Makati.

Secretary Tiu Laurel noted that prices for some basic commodities, particularly chicken and pork, have risen due to heightened demand during the holiday season.

During his visit to Guadalupe Market, the DA chief observed that while some vendors adhered to the ₱40–₱45 price range for well-milled rice, supported by the presence of a Rice-for-All program kiosk, other stalls were selling certain rice brands at a ₱12 premium over the expected price. He assured the public that the DA would investigate the matter promptly and summon the vendors involved for clarification.

“P62 ang benta, sa akin dapat nasa P50 lang ‘yon, so mayroon akong nakikitang problema ngayon doon sa branding na tinatawag,” Sec. Tiu Laurel said.

Meanwhile, Noche Buena grocery items have increased by approximately 5%, though no further price hikes are expected before the end of the year.

During the inspection, the DA and DTI also displayed the DTI’s Noche Buena Price Guide to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions by offering a range of price options for popular holiday items. ### (By Kristel Joyce Merle, DA-AFID)
