THE Davao Region Coffee Council is pushing for more collaboration with the government and the private sector in helping develop local farmers in producing and marketing specialty coffee.
Cesar Cuyugan, the council secretary, bared in Monday’s One Davao Virtual Presser that while Davao Region can hardly compete in terms of production volume for the Philippine market coffee requirement but the specialty and high quality coffee produced by the Region is going to be the edge for local farmers to demand better pricing for their coffee produce.
“As of now we are still working on to cover the local market demand because there is not much supply,” said Cuyugan.
Research data showed that Filipino coffee-drinkers consumed around 3.3 million 60-kilogram bags of coffee in 2020. Davao Region produces 17.8 percent of that total.
“We have collaborated with the baristas for them to help in educating the public, raise their knowledge about coffee, and raise their appreciation of high quality specialty coffee,” Cuyugan said.
He said a coffee shop opened at a popular mall in Davao City where baristas and coffee pop-up owners came together to offer local coffee to the Davao market.
Aside from selling local coffee, baristas also took the chance to educate the customers with how to prepare their own coffee at home and for them to appreciate good quality coffee. (PR)
