IRRI renews partnership with DA

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)–a non-profit research and educational organization dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science–renews its commitment of cooperation with the Department of Agriculture through a the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on February 13, 2019, at the DA Central office in Quezon City.

We take pride in the fact that we host the research institution that developed the rice industry of the world,” Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol said expressing his excitement over the strengthened collaboration.

“This is what our rice industry needs right now, to enable our Filipino rice farmers to compete in the global market. With the renewed alliance with IRRI, we are positive that we will improve our rice productivity,” the agri chief added.

On the part of IRRI, Director General Dr. Matthew Morell expressed his gratitude to DA.

“This (MOA) solidifies our commitment to work at technical and policy support for DA’s programs and initiatives like the Philippine rice industry roadmap, provide cutting edge research and development solutions that can contribute to improving the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of the country’s rice value chain,” Morell said.

The IRRI headquarters, located in Los Baños, Philippines, has been instrumental in developing and improving the local rice industry through research and development. In 2018, it accounts for the development of 320 rice varieties. ### (Carlos Cezar Baldosa, DA-AFID)
