Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol calls for the temporarily lifting of the Special Safeguard (SSG) on onions after a consultative meeting between the Department of Agriculture and onion traders on August 23, 2018, which seeks to cushion the impact of the rising prices of the said kitchen staple. “I need you to show me lower market prices of white and red onions within two weeks. If I don’t see any significant drop, I will revoke this directive,” Piñol warned the traders. Copies of the directive, which takes effect immediately, were sent to the Department of Finance and Bureau of Customs. (Photo by Ardy Tompong/DA-AFID)
